[Ms Schlappner] Good morning everyone! This country, Canada, is a giant tapestry—a beautiful, complicated pattern woven together by millions of different threads, people, and stories. As we just recognized this week, one of those stories is that of Truth and Reconciliation, and the need to do better moving forward with Indigenous communities.
This month, in October, we are focusing on celebrating three huge parts of the Canadian experience:
- First, it’s Canadian Women’s History Month. This is when we celebrate the incredible women—past and present—who didn’t accept the world as it was. They challenged unfair rules, broke barriers in science, politics, and the arts, and literally fought for the right to be considered equals in the eyes of the law. This month, we honor their courage and learn how women like civil rights icon Viola Desmond and engineer Elsie MacGill paved the way for all of us.
- Second, October is Islamic Heritage Month. This is a national celebration to recognize the rich history, deep faith, and amazing contributions of Muslim Canadians. From groundbreaking scientists and artists to community builders and doctors, this month is a chance to learn about Islamic culture, history, and how Muslim communities have enriched Canada for decades.
- And finally, October is Latin and Hispanic Canadian Heritage Month. This is when we celebrate the vibrant cultures, languages, food, and music of Canadians who trace their roots to Mexico, Central America, South America, Spain, and the Caribbean. It’s an exciting time to appreciate the traditions, creativity, and sheer energy that Latin and Hispanic communities bring to every city and town across our country.
So, this October, remember this: History isn’t just old black-and-white photos. It’s the story of how people struggled, succeeded, and built a better future. Let’s make a commitment this month to listen, learn, and recognize the diverse heroes who make Canada the amazing place it is today!
Speaking of all of these wonderful things to celebrate: Last year, we created a student group called the “Culture Club” to organize ways to recognize and celebrate all of the different cultures in our school, especially during special days and months. If you’re interested in helping with any of these three groups that are recognized in October, as well as Diwali on October 20th, please come to the Home Ec Room at lunch on NEXT WEDNESDAY (Oct 8th) to help!
