Today, May 5th, we recognize Red Dress Day (National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S+) by wearing red to honor missing/murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people. Students are encouraged to wear red to show support, learn about this critical issue, and help raise awareness to end violence against Indigenous communities.
Why Red? Red is believed to be the color spirits recognize, so hanging dresses or wearing red helps lost spirits find their way.
Why a special day for Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people? There is a disproportionate amount of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people, with many cases remaining unsolved. Inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project, we use this day to confront this injustice and raise awareness.
