May 1

Welcome to May!

May is Asian Heritage Month AND Jewish Heritage Month.  We will be celebrating both in a number of ways throughout the month.

Congratulations to the Grade 8 badminton team on their excellent play yesterday at SMUS at the city badminton tournament. You all did a great job representing Colquitz. Special shout out to the team of Sol Madden and Carter Nyvall on their doubles play, coming 6th out of 21 schools, and narrowly losing in the consolation finals in two close matches 13 to 11 and 12 10. In singles play, Marcel Michaux will be competing next Monday for the singles championship. Way to go Marcel! Thanks to all of the students who came out to play badminton this year and represent Colquitz.

Jewish Heritage Month is dedicated to celebrating the rich history, culture, and numerous contributions of Jewish Canadians. It’s a time to recognize the significant role Jewish Canadians have played in building a diverse and inclusive Canada.

Asian Heritage Month is an opportunity for us to learn more about the diverse culture and history of Asian communities in Canada, as well as to acknowledge the many achievements and contributions of people of Asian origin who, throughout our history, have done so much to make Canada the country we know and love.

The first important activity we are having to support Asian Heritage Month is a display of messages of support for the Filipino community. If you are not aware, a tragedy occurred in Vancouver this past week where Filipino people were killed.  When members of a community suffer, it impacts everyone. We want to show the Filipino community, and most especially the students and families of Colquitz, that we care about them and are here for them.    If you have not already done this, please ask your teacher about it!  They have been provided with images of the sun from the Filipino flag for you to write messages of kindness, support, and encouragement.  These will be taped on the display by Blue pod.  Thanks for your help with this!

It is also Colquitz Mental Health Awareness Month, which kicks off today! Check the student calendar in your classroom and the office for fun upcoming events to support Mental Wellness during the month of May. No sign-up necessary for different events, the exception being beading tomorrow with Oceanlover Jen.

The fun, free events this month to support Mental Wellness include outdoor games at lunch with Pearkes, yoga, crafts and a Pride Parade / Dance Party!
