June 13

June Pride Announcement to be read by Reese and Lynn:

June is Pride Month in Canada and also many other countries around the world. Pride Month celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and the fight for equal rights.

Colquitz had its Pride week in May and we celebrated by having buttons for sale and having a parade and a dance party. However, to recognize June as the official Pride Month, we wish to address the issue of comments that are not respectful towards people, particularly people who belong to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Some examples of comments we have heard are “that’s so gay”, “they are being zesty” and “you are acting like a homo”.

When you say “that’s so gay”, you are basically saying that being gay is a bad thing. Which is not true and not an okay message to send. Other terms like calling someone “zesty” or saying someone is “acting like a homo” are all derogatory terms that put people down. And they should not be used.

Maybe you yourself do not use the phrases we have just mentioned. However, you have a role as a bystander. If you hear someone making homophobic remarks, you can respond with things like, “that’s not cool to say”, or “what you must said makes me feel very uncomfortable” or, “I am not okay with what you just said”.

If a situation comes up where you don’t know how to respond, you can talk to an adult that you know and trust who can guide you in this.

Thank you everyone, and Happy Pride Month!

Come shop and support the creative minds of Divisions 1, 7, and 10 at our Young Entrepreneur Fair in the gym on Monday, June 16th! Students have been working hard at designing, crafting, and building their own unique products—and they’re excited to share them with you.

You’ll find a wide variety of student-made goods for sale, including body scrubs, fidgets, candles, keychains, jewelry, and more.

Don’t forget to bring cash if you’d like to make a purchase and support these young business minds.

Teachers: Please refer to the sign-up list Ms. Dong sent through email. The gym will be closed to sales during break times.

This is a fun and inspiring event you won’t want to miss!

There is a meeting in the gym at lunch today for boys grade 6, 7 and 8 interested in playing night league basketball with Chris Synesael who helps to run Thunder Nation.  Come after eating time 12:10.

Yearbook Club – Please join us in Ms. Schuring’s room today after school for our celebration party!
