February 25

[Ms S] Today is PINK SHIRT DAY.  If you’re wearing PINK, please come to the foyer at Nutrition Break for a group photo!

If there is only one thing you learn from Pink Shirt Day, it is that it is important to be kind, respectful and safe with EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME, including being aware of how what you say and do impacts others.

So many people use “I was just kidding” to defend racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia.  If you hear someone say something that hurts someone else, a good strategy is to say, “What did you mean by that?” or “I’m sorry – I don’t understand how that’s funny… can you explain that?” or, best of all, “That’s NOT funny.  Stop it.”

We know STANDING UP to bullies can be hard.  But if we all do it, we have more power than the bullies.  If it’s too hard to say something, then go get help from an adult – we’re here to help.  Everyone deserves to feel safe and comfortable at school, and Pink Shirt Day is a reminder of that.

THANK YOU to everyone who does this every day.  We see you and appreciate you.

Today is also a day for celebrating Hobiyee (or Hoobiyee), which  is the Nisga’a New Year, a joyful, annual celebration marking the first crescent moon of February or March and the start of a new harvesting season. It signals the return of the oolichan fish (saak) to the Nass Valley, symbolizing renewal, abundance, and the coming of spring.

Show your school spirit next Friday, March 6th for Dress Like a Staff Member Day! Dress up like a teacher, counselor, or principal. Staff members will be dressing like students too! It’s all about fun, creativity, and celebrating our awesome school community!
