May 5

It is Red Dress Day today.

Red Dress Day, observed annually on May 5th, is a day to remember and honor the higher proportion of Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have gone missing or been murdered in Canadian society.

What it is:

Red Dress Day is a special day where people remember and think about Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people who have been hurt or gone missing.

Why we wear red:

We wear red because it is a sacred colour and to symbolize the spirits of those who have been lost and serves as a visual reminder of the need for justice and action.

How to participate:

You can wear red, hang red dresses in your window, or learn more about why this day is important.

Why it’s important:

It’s important because we want to show that Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people are important and deserve to be safe and loved.

All staff and students are invited to join us to drum the Women’s Warrior song at Nutrition break. We will be meeting behind the garden. This song was created by Elder Martina Pierre of the Lil’wat nation to honour missing and murdered Indigenous Women and is a symbol of healing and strength. This is a song you will hear in many different places to honour women. We will be singing this song 8 times through.
